During his whole life-time of sixty years,
Fethullah Gülen has tasted almost nothing of the worldly pleasures. His life has passed
in celibacy by studying, teaching, travelling, writing, speaking, but always deeply and

20th century.

QUESTIONS THIS MODERN AGE PUTS TO ISLAM In the past, unbelief was the result of ignorance.
Then, when people learned about the truth, they were enlightened and found peace of mind.
But recently unbelief, rejection and denial have been attitudes of those who consider
themselves knowledgeable in all fields, who claim to accept and believe only on rational
or scientific ground. Cloaked in science and rational philosophy, the activity of unbelief
continues in many forms. The quality of believers submission is impaired, under
constant threat and attack.
The
author of this book, sensitive to the real questions people have the questions given rise
to by the modern age has tried, through patient argument, to answer peoples doubts
and questions. |

CRITERIA OR THE LIGHTS OF THE WAY I This book is
a compilation of some of the wise sayings of Fethullah Gülen, each of which is a
criterion or pearl of wisdom by which we may seek and find our way in todays world,
or a light illuminating our way, to live as a responsible, devoted believer. It contains
golden rules for the journeying through life.
Those who
attempt to reform the world must first reform themselves. In order to be followed by
others in the way to a better world, they must purify their inner worlds of hatred,
rancor, and jealousy and adorn their outer worlds with all kinds of virtues. The
utterances of those who are far removed from self-control and self-discipline, who have
failed to refine their feelings, may seem attractive and insightful at first, but they
will not be able to inspire others - or, if indeed they do, the sentiments they arouse
will soon die away
Goodness,
beauty, truthfulness and being virtuous lie in the essence of the world. Whatever happens,
the world will one day find this essence and no one will be able to prevent that
happening. |

UNDERSTANDING AND BELIEF - The Essentials of Islamic Faith Through this
book we learn to question and think our way through the ideas and attitudes we take for
granted. For example, we are taught in schools to believe in (or rather accept
unquestioningly) the theory that first existence, then life, then consciousness, then
conscience, somehow evolved by themselves. Most people assent lazily to such theories
without believing them in any proper sense of the word. The greatest merit of this book is
that it rouses us out of such laziness and makes us think, really think, about what we say
we believe.
Fethullah
Gülen achieves a remarkable sanity and clarity in the gentle way he leads the reader away
from extreme positions towards the balanced "middle position", the strong and
healthy moderation, which has always characterized Islam at its best. |

PROPHET MUHAMMAD AS COMMANDER God sent the
Prophet Muhammad, upon him be peace and blessings, as a "Mercy" to the whole of
creation. His compassion encompasses every creature. Indeed, he was also an invincible
commander and an able statesman. His compassion required that lambs should be able to live
in the utmost security against the attacks of wolves. He desired, of course, the guidance
of everyone. This was his greatest concern as stated in the Quran: "Yet, it may
be, if they believe not in this Message, you will consume yourself, following after them,
with grief." But what could he do for those who persisted in unbelief and actually
waged war against him? When he was even severely wounded in the Battle of Uhud, he held
his hands open towards God and prayed: "O God, forgive my people, for they know
not." His jihad was to revive people, for he came with a Message which decrees
that a man who slays a soul unjustly is as if he slew all mankind and one who revives a
soul or saves a life, is as if he saved the lives of all mankind. |

TOWARDS THE LOST PARADISE This book is composed of Fethullah
Gülen's selected articles which have so far been published in different magazines. In

believing peoples all over the world, and you will witness the lament of a responsible
Muslim thinker for the miserable conditions of the wronged peoples of the world. The
flowery language of Fethullah Gülen will at times take you through a different world, the
happy world of the future, where "flowers" sway on "sloping hills" and
birds sing of spring everywhere, and you will come to know how it can be possible to found
such a world. |
